Moved to a new place? Here is how you can change your address on Aadhaar for free

Have you recently moved to a new place? Well, then you might be busy updating your address on various platforms, including e-commerce sites, banks, and more. Amid all these changes, do not forget to update your address on your Aadhaar. Keeping your Aadhaar address up to date ensures seamless access to services linked to it and helps the Unique Identification Authority of India —the governing body of Aadhaar—prevent misuse such as identity theft.
In fact, right now, updating Aadhaar is also free, and can be done conveniently from anywhere through UIDAI’s online portal. UIDAI has extended the deadline for Aadhaar holders to update their details for free. You can now make changes to your demographic information, such as your address, at no cost until December 14, 2024. This is the second extension this year, following the initial deadline in June 2024. However, this free update applies only to demographic details like address.
Note that, biometric updates, such as changes to fingerprints or iris scans, still require a visit to an Aadhaar center and involve a fee. If you have recently moved or need to correct errors in your Aadhaar, here is a quick guide on how to update it online:
Regularly check the status of your SRN to confirm whether your update has been successfully processed.
Notably, UIDAI advises Indian residents to update their Aadhaar details regularly. While address updates are free online, changes to biometric information must be done in person at an authorized Aadhaar center, which involves a fee.
According to UIDAI Updating Aadhaar is particularly important for children who have Aadhaar generated at a young age and need to update their biometrics after turning 15. Additionally, individuals who have undergone medical procedures or accidents that affected their biometric details also need to update their details.
According to UIDAI, keeping your Aadhaar details up to date ensures seamless access to services and prevents potential complications.
Here are a few reasons why not updating your Aadhaar can cause inconvenience:
– Mismatched addresses or outdated information can create problems during financial transactions, at airports, or when accessing government schemes.
– Inaccurate demographic or biometric data may lead to authentication failures, making it difficult to use Aadhaar for its intended purposes.
– Regular updates also help the government maintain a secure database, reducing the chances of Aadhaar misuse or fraud.
